Worship Defined
Sunday Setlists: July 18th, 2010
“And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.”
(1 Corinthians 2:1-5 ESV)
Each week, we will give you a preview of the music that will shape our time together on Sunday mornings, along with a few links and resources that will help you to sew these songs of faith into your daily life. We look forward to exalting Christ with you this Sunday.
Our Great God
Music and Lyrics by Fernando Ortega and Mac Powell
Psalm 95:1-3 leads us by saying, “Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation! Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise! For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.” As we come to worship the Lord together, we focus on His character and strength. He is worthy to be praised!
“Eternal God, unchanging, mysterious and unknown.
Your boundless love unfailing, in grace and mercy shown.”
The Power of the Cross
Music and Lyrics by Kieth Getty and Stuart Townend
Come Thou Fount
Lyrics by Robert Robinson, Music by John Wyeth
Written in 1758, this hymn’s lyrical content has theological depth and is masterfully arranged. Each line is worth considering on its own and strung all together, the verses continue to stir up affection for the Lord even 250 years after it was originally put to music. One of its greatest strengths might be that with its richness, it remains and easily singable song which helps us proclaim big truths about God, engaging our hearts and minds.
“Here I raise my Ebenezer, Hither by Thy help I’m come
And I hope by Thy good pleasure, Safely to arrive at home
Jesus sought me when a stranger, Wondering from the fold of God
He, to rescue me from danger, Interposed His precious blood”
All I Have is Christ
Music and Lyrics by Jordan Kauflin
This song is quickly becoming a part of our congregations own songbook. Jesus is at the center of the work of God in the world and we find all of our blessings in Him. We wouldn’t have anything worth having if not for Christ’s sacrifice for us and we bring no merit of our own to God. Thanks be to God that He accepts us as we put our faith in Him.
“But as I ran my hell-bound race indifferent to the cost
You looked upon my helpless state and led me to the cross
And I beheld God’s love displayed You suffered in my place
You bore the wrath reserved for me now all I know is grace”
“Hallelujah, All I have is Christ
Hallelujah, Jesus is my life”
Here is Love
Lyrics by William Rees, Melody by Robert Lowry, Arr. by Matt Redman
God’s love for His people is made clear when we see that Jesus would give himself as the sacrifice for our sins, recomciling us to God. How could we doubt such a love as this? God calls us to believe take him at His word and believe while worshipping His word become flesh, Jesus, his clear declaration of His desire for us.
“Here is love, vast as the ocean, loving kindness as the flood
When the prince of life, our ransom shed for us his precious blood
Who his love will not remember, who can cease to sing his praise?
He can never be forgotten throughout heavens eternal days”
See His Love
Music and Lyrics by Tom Lockley
God’s demand for justice is satisfied on the cross and his unyielding love for His people is picture perfectly in the redemption offered through Christ’s sacrifice. The fact that God could have justice and love meet at the cross sows us His glory. We should respond in worship when we begin to comprehend how amazing this work truly is and the gift of grace He gives us through it.
“This is Jesus in His glory
King of Heaven dying for me
It is finished, He has done it
Death is beaten, Heaven beckons me”
