In the pursuit of holiness, humility must remain the watchword as pride can corrupt even the most noble of intentions. When pursuit of gifts replaces the pursuit of the giver, even good things can become our greatest obstacles.
The command to be filled by the Holy Spirit is addressed to the congregation, not to the individual as such. The church as a whole is in view, rather than individual sanctification or power for Christian service. For a congregation to be filled by the Spirit involves both attitudes (gratitude and reverence) and activity (speech, song, and submission). The Christian gathering is a temple of the living God. Ecclesiology matters.1
Pursue holiness by the power of the Spirit. Seek gifts that you may give of yourself to others in service rather than that you might receive in selfishness. Give thanks for what you have been given and find ways to build up the church in humility and love for your brothers and sisters.
