Worship Defined

Sunday Setlist: June 6th, 2010

For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake. For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. -2 Corinthians 4:5-6

Each week, we will give you a preview of the music that will shape our time together on Sunday mornings, along with a few links and resources that will help you to sew these songs of faith into your daily life. We look forward to exalting Christ with you this Sunday.

Jesus Messiah

This song by Chris Tomlin has become quite popular in worship settings over the past few years, and for good reason. It’s easily singable and full of scriptural expressions of what Jesus has done for His people. Jesus is the gateway to a reconciliation with our God.

He became sin who knew no sin
That we might become His Righteousness
He humbled himself and carried the cross

Jesus Messiah, Name above all names
Blessed Redeemer, Emmanuel
The rescue for sinners, the ransom from Heaven
Jesus Messiah, Lord of all

One Righteous Man

Pastor Joel Brown of Mars Hill Church along with his band, Red Letter, have managed to make music that is stirring, both lyrically and musically. “One Righteous Man” gives a haunting picture of the crucifixion of Christ. The magnitude of what happened at Calvary is greater than we know, yet scripture tells us it was all part of His perfect plan. This should be astonishing to us, that our God would sacrifice His only Son to make us righteous in His sight.

Surely up there, our sorrow He bears
See how He shakes, life slowly escapes
The King is crushed, collapsing His lungs
Showering the nations in blood
Yet this is the way His Father has chosen to pay
One righteous Man has many more righteous men made

Into the Arms of Jesus

Thad Cockrell of Vintage21 in Raleigh, NC calls us to run to Jesus with all of our concerns and to offer praise when our eyes don’t yet see the full picture of God’s grace in our lives. We trust in Jesus to save us from our brokenness and life’s insecurities. Check out Thad Cockrell’s new album “To Be Loved” to get a taste of this singer-songwriters own flavor of alt-country.

When you’ve got nothing left to give, praise unto the name of Jesus
Nothing left to give, praise unto His name, unto His name
And when the storm clouds clear, praise unto the name of Jesus
When the storm clouds clear, praise unto His name, unto His name

In Christ Alone

This modern hymn has served the church well in it’s (relatively) short lifespan. It has been a favorite of Sanctuary for years because of the rich lyrical content. This song by Stuart Townend will surely be blessing God’s people for many more years to come.

Lead Us Back

Brooks Ritter and Bobby Gilles of Sojourn Community Church wrote this song as one of repentance for the Church. Christ calls us to a life of joy and abundance, although the life along the path He calls us to will also be one of submission and at times sacrifice. His way is better! Let us be a church that continually goes back to our source, Christ himself.

Falling down upon our knees, Sharing now in common shame,
We have sought security, Not the cross that bears Your name.
Fences guard our hearts and homes, Comfort sings a siren tune
We’re a valley of dry bones; Lead us back to life in You.

Rise and Sing

Steve Fee tends to write straight forward rock songs, with simple but important truths. This song is no different and declares that Jesus is our King and we are right to celebrate the work He has done. The fact that Jesus is alive and on the throne should cause is to rejoice in His victory.

Our God is risen and reigning
and we’re elevating the glory of our God and king,
Everybody rise and sing
