Scriptures are God’s revelation of himself—his self-disclosure. In the Bible, this revelation preaches the same gospel. It is all about Jesus. In his life, death, and resurrection, we have the clearest revelation of God. Yet, a battle rages within every one of us. We don’t like the exclusive claims of the gospel on us or on others. It’s the clash between our sense of stubborn self-sufficiency and God’s call to recognize that we’re really nothing without him. It’s pride versus humility. It is a fight we can’t win without looking repeatedly to Jesus and his cross.

Yet God reveals himself definitively at the cross. There he gives us the ultimate sign of Jesus crucified—a sign of how we’re to come and how he has come and died that we might live. He desires that we honestly assess ourselves in light of his holiness and our sinfulness. He beckons us to turn from self-sufficiency and pride. This is the call to be reconciled to God and others by humbling ourselves and then letting his grace lift us up and lead us.versus humility. It is a fight we can’t win without looking repeatedly to Jesus and his cross.
