God is holy, yet we are sinful. The heart of the cross is God substituting himself in our place. We all have been defiled by sin and are by nature children of wrath. The biggest problem we face is sin. God hates sin (Prov. 6:16; Zech. 8:17) and hides his face from sinful people (Isa. 59:2; 64:7). To both demonstrate his hatred of sin and love for sinners, Jesus averted the wrath of God by dying on the cross as a substitute for us.

In addition, because sin defiles us, we need Jesus just as much when we’re sinned against as when we sin. That is why Jesus doesn’t just forgive us, but also cleanses us. He bore God’s wrath and our shame. By his wounds you are cleansed, loved and accepted.
