Worship Defined

Sunday Setlists: July 18th, 2010

“And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.”
(1 Corinthians 2:1-5 ESV)

Each week, we will give you a preview of the music that will shape our time together on Sunday mornings, along with a few links and resources that will help you to sew these songs of faith into your daily life. We look forward to exalting Christ with you this Sunday.

For the Young Mother

Ministry, Guilt, and Seasons of Life

Guilt is a young mother’s habitual shadow. It has a nasty way of soaking through many of her efforts at nurturing, serving and loving others. “Am I doing enough for my children? For others? What do they think of me? What does God think of me?”

As a young mother everyone wants something from you—your family, your church, your boss, your neighbor. And most likely, you give way more than you ever thought you could. But along the way guilt nibbles at your soul, eating away your inner peace and joy. And it often lingers through the years, even after your children are grown and gone.

Dear young mother, don’t waste your guilt! Read more

Pastor Dad

Pastor Dad

As a Father’s Day gift, I would like to pass on a simple resource to encourage other dads in their high calling to shepherd the flock that resides under their roof. Of course, the material can be of service to husbands, future dads, or any man who is preparing for what God may bless him with in the future. My prayer is that God would use it to help us grow into mature manhood and walk in a manner worthy of the gospel (Eph. 4:13, 2 Thess. 1:11).

Jesus Storybook Bible

At Sanctuary, we never  get tired of telling people, “It is all about Jesus, it is only about Jesus, it is always about Jesus!” This mantra is meant to redirect our self-centered, self-absorbed, self-seeking mindset. We need to be reminded on whom we should center our attention, whose glory should absorb us, and who we should seek to know and love more. Nowhere is that more true than when we come to the Bible.

Acts 29: The Story Continues

The history of the church is a continuation of the story concerning what Jesus began in his earthly ministry. The story continues today as Jesus continues to work through his people by the power of the Spirit.

The Book of Acts chronicles not only the history of the early church, but the history of the mission of the early church. Luke is primarily interested in showing us the spread of Christianity — how it broke through barriers of all sorts to change lives, families, cities, peoples. We have recorded for us real history to teach us about being men and women on mission with Jesus. Read more

The church is not simply a collection of individuals who follow Jesus, but it is a preview of what humanity will look like under the rule of Jesus. We are to show the world a redeemed picture of people living together. The Spirit creates a new family that demonstrates a supernatural love for one another that is both attractive and counter-cultural. This is itself a presentation of the gospel. Read moreRead more

We are on mission for Jesus. We don’t just send people with the gospel to another culture. We all are sent to our own culture with the gospel. The gospel of Jesus calls us to be for our city— including its culture and people. Read moreRead more

Church History Reading List

An attempt to cover two thousand years in ten weeks is not only impossible but unreasonable. Add to that the responsibility of examining the Scriptures in context and then communicating cultural implications for today—only the Spirit can produce a fruitful result!

It is my prayer that we see the Spirit’s work in the world and the timeless relevance of what he has communicated to us in his Word. To assist you toward that end, several groupings of books are listed for those interested in learning more about the history of the church & Western civilization.   Read moreRead more

All of life is repentance. It is not only how we begin the Christian life, but how we continue in it. Instead of just having a once in a lifetime decision of faith, we should have a lifetime of many faithful decisions. Read moreRead more

“Death is swallowed up in victory.
O death, where is your victory?
O death, where is your sting?”

“The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:54-58 ESV)

audiodiscussion questions

Religion produces pride, but the gospel produces humility. Faith in yourself is simply a form of self-glorification and idolatry. Faith in Jesus glorifies him and liberates us to worship freely. The Reformation sought to return to a God-centered understanding of the gospel—where God sets the standard and he meets the standard, where he is righteous and he makes us righteous.
